The Cafe Royal in London by William Orpen, 1912. Irish painter Orpen is best known for being a war artists in the First World War. This piece shows a pre-war London in the grand setting of the Cafe Royal on Regent Street in Piccadilly. There is a strong sense of verticality, with the ornate columns and hung up coats, and there is an almost unwelcome feeling for the viewer, especially in the expression shown on the waiter’s face!
